4D is a wide, low-profile case rather than a tall one — at over 20 inches long but under 9 inches tall, it's built to sit flat in a shallow compartment (common in marine and RV battery trays) rather than stand upright like a Group 31 or 8D. If your equipment bay is wide and shallow rather than deep, this shape fits where a taller battery of similar capacity wouldn't.
